I think we are better as Segura as a backup---but you all know that---that said great game--we got some guys who can light it up--best game in years
Bob, Tyler did GREAT as the backup point. However we need Jerome for two reasons, the first being that IMO he is better than you think he is, but even more important, if Tyler has to do all the required duties of the position for a long time my fear is that he will get worn down and his shooting and scoring will suffer.

Regarding the Bagley reference, when I saw JJ twice drive the hoop, take a hit, and still lay the ball in, I mentioned this thought to JS (that his style reminded me of the former great from Bridgeport), and his response was that he was thinking the same thing! Just talking about style, career TBD. But certainly some great possibilities for this VERY confident young player.
And the comparison to our version of Steph Curry works for Tyler in terms of his body control in traffic. Great story on the Times website about the ballet like skills of Curry by the way.
And so often in a freshman class we seem to hope for one or two impact players, well now we may end up with four! And Aidas in the wings with TN. I also believe if we continue to play in this style it will help our recruiting for a replacement for Marcus.
I think JJ had, at least, 2 very impressive drives where he took it to the hole, got fouled, hung in the air and finished the bucket. His shot really hasn't been "on" - yet. It's really nice to see him able to contribute with passing, dribbling and driving.
Nash ---IMO-- Segura is a backup -- I did not say don't play him --- also I am a big Smith fan , wish they would give him done PT
49bob - you've mentioned several times that Segura is best as a backup, but you haven't provided any reasoning as to why you feel that way - would you care to expand on your opinion? I'd be interested in hearing it.
Finally got around to watching the Northwestern game today. Was impressed by the better passing and greater willingness to take it to the basket. Cut down on the turnovers and improve the defense a bit and this team could be pretty good.
Segura, though not perfect, is an enormous upgrade over our previous PG. He should only improve with more playing time.

[/quote] Interestingly enough 79, both JS and myself have thought of the same comparison of style, Tyler to Curry. BTW, Steph was not some hot-shot no-brainer All-American when he started his collegiate career. Worked hard on all aspects of his game and his career really exploded once he settled in at Davidson. Again folks, talking about style and possibilities (not suggesting Nelson will ever get near the level of SC), but Tyler is smart, a gym rat and a hard worker who seems to figure out things pretty quickly. Be fun to see how much he can accomplish in his career as a Stag!

And a further reply to your post 79, Marcus will be hard to replace. BTW, a career high of 32 points last night. Great game for sure! Looks like he is expanding his game with more athletic moves to the basket (even got a post up score at the beginning of the game). But I do think a lot of his minutes will be taken by Cobb starting next season. He is really more of a 3G than a 2 (or 1). Better ball handler than Marcus, probably a better shooter too. Not as big of course and not as good a rebounder. That said we will probably be in the market for more help at the SF position in terms of a lanky big-wing player with similar height and length (and skills) as the departing Marcus.

I just think we have better guard play with him as a backup---we have better scoring and I don't think we lose much with the others finding the open man ie assits-----he seems too out of control and think we are just a better team when he is not getting big minutes---again, I am not saying don't play him--but look at last game--I know not one game does a season make but we have so much firepower without him getting big minutes and Tyler had 9 assits and 20 points---Backup IMO---Pus Smith needs minutes over King maybe Milan--I think and have always thought Smith has a big upside and is wasting away on the bench--feel bad for the kid, he has talent
Sid has said that Smith was playing his best ever before his injury. It will be tough for him to crack the rotation up front until foul trouble or injury. I'm sure he will get a few minutes here and there and will just have to make the most of them.
The guard play was amazing with regards to Passing, Ballhandling, Shooting and Rebounding. We certainly have a talented set of 4 guards that were clicking last night.
- Segura started like a man on fire by rebounding, and blowing by everyone coast to coast and dishing off - Then Jerry Buckets just attacked the hoop off steals, great passes and some very impressive drive like a young John Bagley. He creates momentum. - Tyler then showed his Tom Brady like long passing to go with no look passes, and tip passes and leading players like a QB. He is playing in the style of Steph Curry - And then it was Cobb's turn after a few turnovers, his crossover dribble, and drive and dish passes gave it to wide open shooters. Smooth, and then quietly quick.
But the biggest catalyst was our passing. UMES's players had their heads spinning. And then Marcus, Tyler, Cobb and Milin all easily drained threes….. because their feet were set. All setup by quick ball penetration.
Many stars of the game, and Marcus was a supreme finisher Inside, Outside and on the fast break….. even coast to coast. Marcus is a great finisher. with 4 guards that can play like we did, Marcus can be great.
Jerry Buckets is like a young John Bagley. Great comparison!
Stago, I have to credit Nashville with the John Bagley reference. As soon as Nashville mentioned it, it was a perfect comparison. I asked Jerry Buckets if he had ever seen John Bagley play or knew about him. He said no to both counts.

So true, and the same for Kirkland and Degnan too. Suggests however the improvement in the team when players who contributed quite a bit last season (especially Mike) can not even get off the bench for any important minutes. But all three have to play hard and well in practice and be ready to contribute if needed. Much better situation than last year!
