I’m looking at this as a fresh start a year earlier than I anticipated. Any player considering a departure would be wise to see how this plays out. It could be very good for the players and fans. Go Stags!
I want to be optimistic. But there are so many questions right now and not a lot of answers.
I was talking earlier today to another "source associated with the administration." Since its a third hand rumor, take this with a grain of salt but this individual relayed to me that members of the leadership other than the AD were most unhappy with Jay Young, were unhappy with the extension and were looking for a reason to end the contract. And it seems, a clear reason to end things here and now arose.
so is this a blessing long term? Maybe. Maybe not. Time will tell.
Trilly Donovan’s article in burnerball.com today confuses what I thought I understood. He’s claiming multiple sources are telling him Johns is on administrative leave and that neither Dougher or Young was involved in the incident in Costa Rica.
The university reportedly opened an investigation into the program following the team’s foreign tour to Costa Rica. University officials interviewed coaches, players and staff about an alleged incident involving one of the assistant coaches. One source familiar with the situation said Dougher and Young were not present at the time of the incident, but their actions after the investigation started ultimately led to their dismissals. Johns remains on leave and it’s unclear if he will return to the team this season.
Trying to make sense of this. If Johns is on "administrative leave" how is it he was performing job duties Monday in Atlantic City? I don't know. There is a lot of data swirling around, some of which seems to be inaccurate. We may never know the truth, as there is no question that confidentiality and non disclosures would be part of any separation like this.
In this day and age, "journalists" feel the need to run with anything they hear, even if it is unsubstantiated. Hence the reason for the historically low trust in the media.
We fans should not be throwing fuel on the fire, especially when we have no idea what really happened.
I have to assume that something happened and that it was serious enough to merit removal. To remove someone without just cause opens one up to lawsuits and it is unlikely the Fairfield admin would do that. I think it is fair to say that whatever happened is certainly a shame. These guys made some sort of serious mistake that will likely make it difficult for them to find another high level job in this industry.
But I'm not sure we can pin blame on the AD or the President for this. It is certainly fair game to question the hire of Young and place the responsibility of his hiring on those guys. But I don't think it is fair to conjecture that this circumstance was somehow their fault without any concrete facts that justify that claim.

I'm a bit confused by this article. If Young & Dougher were not involved with whatever Johns did, why are they fired but Johns could potentially rejoin the team?
Young wasn’t fired, he resigned. I don’t think the administration ever stated whether Dougher resigned or was fired.
Am I being unreasonable in thinking the administration could easily clarify Johns’ situation with something similar to one of the following statements:
1. Jay Young and Bryan Dougher are no longer coaches for Fairfield basketball. No action has been taken for any of the other coaches or staff of the men’s basketball program.
2. Assistant Coach Johns is on administrative leave from the men’s basketball team.
I would hope it turns out to be situation #1. Johns name is being sullied and if what Trilly Donovan is claiming is wrong, the administration should put out a statement to clear his name and reputation.

Faced with being fired, some people prefer resigning for obvious reasons. As for the claims of lack of leadership by the “silent” administration, I think it does show leadership to actually deal with this situation as harshly as they did.
Calling people cowards without any detailed information is strictly amateur hour. As is the suggestion that the administration isn't consulting lawyers and PR people.
A leader lets you know that they are in charge. A coward hides. They are cowards. We expect our leaders to “show up” in tough situations. I sure hope they are consulting outsiders. I hope those outsiders are telling them to step up and make their presence known. I’m by no means saying tell details - that’s an HR matter and not necessarily made public.
So Nemec is a coward because he's not handling a situation the way you think he should, even though we almost certainly don't know as much about what happened as he does. You criticize Fairfield's administration, from lower-level folks right through and including Nemec, quite a bit. What is your university administration background?
A half way decent undergrad education, lots of continuing Ed directly on management plus have been at times, worked for a few self maker billionaires who have gone through ups and downs I believe makes my opinion valuable and on point. . All of the good ones bosses stepped up and said “it’s ultimately on me”. Mark and Paul haven’t done that to my knowledge. It’s time sensitive and high profile. Cowards hid in these instances.

So zero experience in university administration.
Direct, no but my bonafides with and as a long term observer of FU are up there any poster on this board.
I also have a good deal of career management and administrative experience-much if it is transferable to any industry. It’s easy to spot good, bad, mediocre, comfortable types in adminstrative and leadership roles.
Fairfield is not elite administratively- it’s rare to top level administrative talent in education - the best talent in this discipline is spread among industry, is highly sought after and is paid extremely well.
The post from the Fairfield Stags Twitter handle, also reposted by Fairfield Men’s Basketball shows Casey and Johns in Atlantic City on Monday. That’s all the statement you need to show he’s not on administrative leave.
Speculation is fair game for Young and Dougher given the announcement and their names not appearing on the website. But not fair to lump others in.
Personally, I love how we have an experienced HC in Casey to provide stability and leadership. John’s has been involved in a number of our recent recruits. We’ll be ok with this duo this year. Certainly not a step back from JY at the helm.
Am I missing something? Neither Johns jr or John sr are in that photo. That is Caleb Fields...
I think we all need to be a little patient until all the facts come out. No need to call people cowards right away or play guessing games. There's are tons of steps in this type of process.

Finally, a voice of reason!
This specific circumstance isn’t Paul or Mark’s fault The overall state of MBB and MLax is.
The last 2 years of PSs reign at CCSU re: their high profile sports- 16-17 MBB 6-23, FB 2-9, WBB 11-20; 15-16 MBB 4-25, FB 4-7, WBB 12-18
Anyone that thinks they understand a situation like this enough to call leaders cowards with certainty …..without knowing any facts……has never been in the arena. The concept that a non-cowardly leader always leads with his chin is so naive it’s funny.
The only reason i react to it is because calling leaders of a college ….who by most measures are doing a good job….COWARDS, is incendiary and deserves a response. In retrospect, we may find we disagree with them way it was handled, and we may be frustrated, but really?
I have the experience to know…….please read Roosevelt quote on MEN IN THE ARENA………you get used to the NOISE from the peanut gallery when you put yourself out there….and do whaat you think is right and then do your best to ignore the noise. It’s not for most, because most people have thin skin. Takes some stones.
I decided to take a sabbatical from my job. I needed the time to digest thirteen pages of comments. I think that Casey should be allowed to coach the entire season to see how he manages. No new head coach at this time. It's a travesty that the players are forced to endure this nonsense. These are young, impressionable people. Finally, where does Young reappear? Back to Rutgers?
