A lot more pressure on him now. I don’t think it was a capacity crowd, but big arena, big expectations with new coach at GT, big spot where he can almost secure win. He probably will adjust better as season goes on.
^I’ll grant the 2 foul shots Supreme missed near the end of the game might be choking under pressure, but that doesn’t explain the other 6 of 11 he’s missed this year. It might be what sobro suggested— that his strength and conditioning workouts have changed his muscle makeup some and it’s affecting his foul shooting or maybe Supreme figured there was no real need to practice foul shooting because he’d gotten to the point where he was hitting over 63% from the line and there were other parts of his game that Cooley wanted him spending more time developing.
5 of 11 is just a fraction of a season. surely we could find many streaks where he did similar over the past few years. i'm pretty confident he's a low-60's% shooter for the season.
i'm sure it would be possible for someone to plot out the optimal release point and arc for his size... then you set up the plexiglass dividers - so that it is literally impossible for him to use the line drive technique - and let him work at it for weeks... ideally in the off-season.
I’m surprised that no players have tried the old underhand technique. I think Rick Barry, a great scorer, used it back in the 60’s. I think Wilt Chamberlin, a terrible free throw shooter, hit 30 out of 32 in the game were he scored 100 points against the Knicks back in 60’s. And of course Ollie, who used the technique to hit 2 clutch free throws that advanced Hickory High to the Indiana state tournament finals in 1954 (?).

There is a school of thought that teaching shooting and using one shooting technique is the way to go. There is also concern among players about being ridiculed for using the underhand technique. I am about 82% underhand and only shoot in the 60's overhand. I just find it much easier to make free throws underhanded. I think many people would realize its easier if they were open to trying it.

I would tend to agree for most guards/forwards - but for the true centers that don't shoot from the outside and especially the ones like Cook that get fouled a bunch - whatever it takes to get his FT% up near 80 should be the goal. He's literally costing his team (himself) a couple of points per game. Not news to him... we've heard him talk about it in interviews... but so far he's made little progress.
St John’s beaten solidly by Michigan. I am a NY guy so I usually would not hope for a NYC team to lose. However, now that Pitino is with the Johnnies I’ll break my on rule.
St. John’s roster has a problem up front. “We did a good job of putting this team together … but our frontcourt depth is terrible,” the Johnnies’ coach said after his team’s dismal 89-73 loss to Michigan at the Garden on Monday night. “You need to have five or six frontcourt guys, and we have too much depth in the backcourt and not enough depth in the frontcourt.”
