Marquette takes down #1 Kansas last night. Shaka Smart's team is going to be an interesting case study this season. They have no players on the team from the transfer portal since the rules changed about everyone being immediately eligible. Kolek is a transfer but has now been there 3 years. Everyone else on the roster is home grown.
Iona beats Buffalo 89-64 to win the highly coveted 7th place game in the 8 team 2023 Gulf Coast Showcase tournament.
For those anxiously awaiting the finals result, Hofstra beat High Point 97-92 in OT to take the Championship. Former SHU star Tyler Thomas scored a career high 40, including 33 in the 2nd half. Interestingly, zero during overtime. Former MAAC players Jacco Fritz and Silas Sunday each scored 6 points in limited time before fouling out.

Wow, 40 for Tyler! Good for him. Certainly he represents another talent that Anthony Latina recruited to Sacred Heart only to see him have his best years later on performing for another school and at a higher level to boot. But in that vein, maybe one guy who he recruited who has not left his program and seems to be coming into his own is Tyler's brother Tanner who I notice has been having some nice games so far in this early portion of the season. Indeed he might be a dangerous player to compete against when the Stags go up to SHU in a couple of weeks. The Pioneers, desperate for a win over the Stags, may see blood in the water based on the current state of both teams. And certainly Tanner Thomas might indeed play a big part in how that contest plays out.
Among those who have gotten off to a bad start this season in the MAAC (i.e. one or no wins so far) —- the one win for both Rider and us was against non-D1 competition, MSM and Siena only have D1 opponents on their schedule this year, and St. Peter’s & Niagara play their non-D1 opponent in the coming weeks.
So, Niagara, Rider, and us are still looking for their first win this season against a D1 opponent. Before MAAC play starts, we face UNH tomorrow, Niagara plays at St. Francis on Saturday and Rider plays at Maryland on Tuesday.
Manhattan at UCONN Friday, November 24 at 2:00 pm XL Center, Hartford, CT on FS1
UConn has a streak of 22 straight nonconference wins by at least double digits. If they win their next two OOC games by 10 or more points, they’ll have set a NCAA record for most consecutive nonconference wins by a double digit margin. UConn has Manhattan today and New Hampshire on Monday attempting to prevent them from accomplishing that feat.
Personally, I’d be very surprised if Manhattan can keep it close against UConn in Hartford.

It may be some time before Stags fans see a victory against a D1 team. Teamrankings.com a site that uses lots of analytics to predict the chances of a team winning a game does not have FF favored to win until the game VS Wagner' If their predictions are true FF would be 0-9 against D1 competition and be off to perhaps the Stags worst start. Let's hope they are dead wrong, and the team becomes completely healthy while winning some of those games. Let the turn around begin with UNH! Go Stags. Stags chance to win vs: UNH-44% IONA-30% Rider-25% Yale -5% SHU-26% WAGNER- 56%

UConn wins 90-60 keeping their double digit victory streak over nonconference opponents alive at 23. A win Monday over New Hampshire and they’ll have the NCAA record for consecutive double digit wins over nonconference opponents. Remember this streak includes all the games from last season’s NCAA tournament.
Other results on Friday: (N)Canisius 76 Wofford 67

Three MAAC wins today (all against D-1 competition BTW). Canisius, Niagara and Marist with the honors. And one still out there in the balance (as I put this computer to bed). MSM holding on to a 1 point lead over Howard with 29 seconds to go.
