I think for Fairfield to break into the top a team in the 20 to 25 position is going to need to lose one or more games. So far today all held serve.
Saturday, February 3, 2024
Pacific. 39 19 Gonzaga 104
Brown 63 25 Princeton 76
23 West Virginia 76 BYU 69
The teams in question are. Princeton, syracuse, north carolina, creighton, utah or west virginia. Tomorrow 3 of the above have games

There will be some losses today, but I think it might take another week. I could see them highest among others receiving votes.
Stags have also made it to a similar spot in the Coaches Poll.

Rutgers had a rare B1G win against Nebraska and St John’s continues to play well in the Big East.

A different bounce or one less turnover in the Vandy game and we could be there. MAAC Conference makes it very difficult. It will be quite an accomplishment if we get there. We have to keep winning and a ranked teams need to lose.

Let's hope it doesn't come to that and the real argument is who should be favored when 21st ranked Fairfield faces off against unranked UCONN? 😊 Obviously, the committee is not going to pit UConn against Fairfield, but I understand your point. Of course, UConn would be the favorite against Fairfield. It obviously has more star power and would draw better. And, yes, these are things the NCAA committee considers. To me, it comes down to the same-old argument: do you take the better team or the more deserving team? In this debate, I tend to favor the latter. It is hard to imagine a 30-2 Fairfield being left out of the tournament. What is the history of such teams? Then again, a 13-0 Florida State was left out of the college football playoff. Of course, there was a caveat there as the "Noles were seen as a lesser team without their quarterback, who was injured. It could, I suppose, come down to the committee deciding whether a seventh-place team in the ACC or SEC should get in over Fairfield. Again, the better team vs. more deserving team debate.

The last 2 years the NCAA has designated the "last 4 out" of the tournament - as potential replacements if some team should be struck by COVID.
Of the 8, a 23-5 Columbia team with a NET ranking of 47 was the last team left out of the 2023 NCAA tournament. They eventually lost in the NIT Final to Kansas. That or a 26-6 (NET 59) UMASS team are probably the closest examples of a potential "30-2" Fairfield scenario.

I think it would be tough to get in without winning the conference tourney...

I think it would be tough to get in without winning the conference tourney... Totally agree. As stated above, 23-5 Columbia did not get in last year with a NET of 47. Stags are now at 74.

Well for those folks hoping Fairfield will crack the top 25. There are three teams in the top 25 today that face match-ups that pose some level of difficulty. These games are:
Princeton(25) at Penn (184 .net) Depaul(96 .net) vs Creighton(21) Oklahoma(24) vs Iowa St(38 .net)
While any of these top 25 teams losing would be an upset, these three games are likely to be the most competitive. Iowa State certainly is a good school that has the ability to knock Oklahoma out of the top 25. Certainly a loss by Princeton to Penn or Creighton to DePaul could do the same.

^Princeton, Oklahoma, and Creighton all won yesterday so it’s very unlikely that any of them will drop out of the AP Top 25.

It's starting to look more and more like this year's UCONN team will struggle to get beyond the Sweet 16. For a UCONN team to have their best victory be... a good Louisville team... is a far cry from the glory days. I wonder how much longer Geno will coach.

Well, I am a little pessimistic about us breaking the top 25. Fairfield didn't blow away SPU as expected. Saturday and Sunday were worst case scenarios days as the top 25 goes as all the teams ahead of Fairfield won except in the case of top 25 teams playing each other. But in most of those cases, the lower seeded team won which also didn't help. So as FF noted, WVU is probably the best chance for a team to fall, but Stags need to surpass a couple of teams to see their name in lights. We might need to win a couple of more and see a few more losses. Stags actually fell in the net rankings to 82.
