Good comments. I kind of see the issue with Rose a little differently. For me the primary issue with Rose is not his shooting but his turnovers. 9 versus Rider and 6 versus Monmouth are just too many. Many of these turnovers were really unforced and led to easy buckets for the other team. Even if his shooting numbers did not improve, if these turnovers could be eliminated we could win a lot more games.
I agree that some of Rose's turnovers are careless. Those will be cleaned up as he gets more experienced with the length and quickness of the college game. He also has been affected by Grennan not being there to offset some of the Ballhanding rresponsibilities
But most of the turnovers are due to Rose's aggressiveness in trying to make things happen with his penetration. More positives things (scores/assists/fouls) happen with his aggressive penetration than the negative things that happen with these turnovers. So I do not want to curb any of Rose's aggresiveness and penetration. This is exactly similar to 5 years ago with Needham. He also turned the ball over at the same rate as Rose (about 4 per game), but Needham's aggresiveness was certainly more valuable than those turnovers. Both players lacked a consistent ballhandler at 2G early in their career. It wsn't until Wade arrived, that Needham cut down on his turnovers. Rose does need that consistent 2G to help bail him out.
I see Rose and Segura rotating at PG and also playing at the same time. Very similar to a Wade/Needham, Han/Herbie, and Goode/Todd. We need as much ballhandling as we can get next year, but conmpetion is good
I'm not anti-Rose. I just think he's a guy that normally would compete for a job as a Junior/Senior - after he's improved on his limitations. He should never have been placed in the position that he is - that's on SJ. Remember we got him late - and it was possible that we went into this season with no PGs on the team - a huge knock on SJ - pure roster mismanagement or the lack of ability to close. Rose/SJ are lucky that the MAAC is down this year. Can you imagine if he was going up against a Steve Burtt Jr, Momo Jones or Kiki Clark? Those guys beat up on some pretty good defenders - they'd eat a slow freshman alive.
rf, your comments are not over the top. Matter of fact IMO your comments are very balanced. Keeping the absolute number of TO's down each game is important as you indicated in your post. However, what is most important for a point guard is the season long ratio of assists to turnovers. KJ is slightly negative 1:1.04 which is not bad for a frosh guard handling the pressure of playing 30 plus minutes. I expect the point guard to have a relatively high number of TO's because he is handling the ball most often. Much like a shortstop or second basemen in baseball who often have a high number of errors because they are handling the ball much of the time. In baseball I look for the ratio of errors to "put outs" by each of these players to make a judgment. The pressure on KJ will only increase now the grennan is un-desireable on the team. Who will come in for KJ when he has a rough spot handling the ball during the remainder of the season? Jenkins, very nervous about that? Steve Johnson, I think not. Chapelle, too green? That is why it is important to have grennan back on the team for the remainder of the season as a b/u point in order to rest KJ. I don't think that's going to happen because Sid has already made up his mind he believes his point guard situation will be better with a combination of KJ and Segura then with KJ and Grennan. Sean Gennan is now expendable. The key IMO, is to develop/recruit a consistent #2 guard which will take the pressure from the point guard. This is something we did not have during the needham era and still do not have today. Since the discussion is about TO's look at Marcus and Mo who handle the ball a lot less then KJ and are relatively TO prone compared to KJ. Gilbert .51:1 and MO .76:1
Nelson was a backup with the BABC. Best case is he's a 5-7 minute player next year. We're in trouble in any freshman is asked to player a lot more than that. If they are, then we're 5-19 again.
