Lets hold on folks. This guy will have 1 losing season out of 3. Yes a nightmare losing season, but you gotta give him a shot.
Mitch got fired at Siena after 3 consecutive losing seasons.
We are all frustrated, most have criticisms of this coach, but, you gotta have more than one losing season to ask for his head, call him a lame duck or spend a bundle buying out a contract.
Hell, we could use that money for a bucket of paint and a roller for Alumni Hall.
Paulie, again (as in other thread) very fair and well thought out points. The point of reckoning for Sydney Johnson may be in a year or two if things don't improve, but that point is not now IMO.

Nashville: What do you think about 2 years from now Do you see a MAAC championship in Sidibe/Gilbert/Gilbert's senior season? I could live with 500 next year if I think the grand prize was attainable the following year.

That would certainly be the goal. Look there is obviously going to be a lot of unknowns again going into next year, just like this past year. But one big difference is that we will have the above mentioned 3 (not to forget players such as Coleman and Justin), then you add EXPERIENCED players to the mix like KJ, Smith, (maybe Chappell), and you would certainly think (and certainly EXPECT) dramatic improvement over a 1-2 year period. And this is not even counting our recruited freshmen as well as (whomever) the mystery guests. If in two years the team isn't a real contender for the championship then I will be extremely disappointed just like everyone else.
Nash - you're not projecting Grennan & Davis in the mix.
I don't project them to be contenders in two year. It's awfully tough to go from .500 to Number 1. We don't/won't have a go-to guy that can consistently give us 18-20. Marcus has the physical tools but I don't see a killer instinct in him - other than the Louisville game, he really hasn't attacked the basket. Based off how he finished last year, I was very hopeful about Coleman making a jump this year-he hasn't done so. At 5-19, SJ should have developed Malcolm - this is a lost year for him. KJ is a marginal offensive threat and not a defender.

Ghost, perhaps I should have with Grennan and Davis. However unfortunately it doesn't look too good for them right now does it? Things can change however. As far as predictions, I guess I am more of an optimist then some. For instance you say Marcus has the physical tools and he showed them against Lousville. Well I have seen the same thing and from an optimistic point of view say why not again (and again and again) if he does indeed have the ability. Hopefully at some point this trait kicks in on a more regular basis. BTW I actually liked the fact that in the Monmouth game he did actually up fake a couple of times from the perimeter and went around his defender and made (I think) a mid range jump shot one time and then a layup the other. Do you remember that? Same type of idea with Coleman. He has ability, it just has to come out. Same with the others you mentioned. Not always of course, but it has been proven many times that experience does count. We shall see in due time. And BTW I am excited to find out what Nelson and Degnan can bring to the mix (based on seeing them play). Can't comment on Segura of course because I have not watched him. And Ami showed some inate ability the other day (28 points), but he is raw and a couple of years away from really helping IMO. Summary to our differing thoughts I guess is that you have been very close to a situation (Mitch) which DID NOT improve so I understand your reluctance to endorse more time for Sydney, whereas my thought process is influenced by empirical evidence that college teams quite often do get better quickly with experience and a few good additions.

Among the many things that killed the team during my years was players losing trust in the coaches. With a full roster and scholarships still being offered, everyone is looking over their shoulders. There's got to be a feeling of betrayal towards them. The coaches need guys that will run through walls for them. Players need the same from the coaches.

Having one losing season is not a surprise you consider we lost our entire backcourt….. I think history has surely shown that with other teams And a Downward trend was easy to see with all the upper classmen we were losing ….. Just as easy to see that we will be on an upward trend for the next 3-4 years. Sydney is not going anywhere, His job in not in jeopardy. And why should it. He has proven the following as a coach:
- He can rebuild a team and take them to the NCAA Tourney - He has won many MAAC Tourney games and Post season games, even with late season injuries to starting guards - He has won games against good teams when we were not the favorite
Don’t we want a coach that can win big games, Post-season games, and got to the NCAA tourney like Sydney. Hasn't that been our achillies heel. The focus on regular season record is a little skewed as we had a much better record prior to injuries. And even with that Sydney was able to re-engineer the team, to be serious contenders for an NCAA bid. That is important and impressive stuff.

Joe Stag, respectfully, if he IS NOT IN JEOPARDY, I may have to check out for a season or two with a few others. I simply cannot get invested with this team under this regime. It is the Titanic and we are letting him steer the ship right into the iceberg.
This program is a dud. The recruiting is circumspect, communication is non-existent, and the results show with his record. Cooley built something good and SJ has taken it down brick by brick in my opinion. The have no idea how to run an offense, hold a lead, etc. He has no concept of how to coach to a player's strength due to his stubbornness. Yes, he won in the IVY league but it isn't translating. Game over for his tenure here. Sad that we are handcuffed to endure more of this past the next 6 games.
When we have 500 people at the last game for Mo Barrow's senior night, I will feel terribly. We'll be 7-23 and on the heels of the worse season ever with nothing too promising in the future.
Thank God I went to see GW play Fordham and Towson play NW this year, it erases all of the Stag games that I have watched on ESPN3.

Yes, Experience does count. Everyone will be a year more experienced next year. That does not mean that 100% of them will be better, but most will. I see only one major issue with this team, We need a "special" guard that is All MAAC. I have said that many times that it would need to be a Needham, Han, or Todd like player. And it really needs to be a scoring guard that can play the 2G or 3G, and give us that additional that we sorely need. It will not take much for us to make a big jump, but we need that "special" player, and it needs to be a 2G/3G.
And the Fairfield teams that won with Mitch did so because young talented players turned into experienced upperclassmen...... and we had a special guard in Tony George

Obviously I disagree. Winning is what brings fans to the game, and losing makes them stay away. Win and they will come, and win and the CT Post will cover us more. Sydney has won big games, not just for Princeton but also for Fairfield. I would much rather rate him on how he does in big games against good teams, as compared to rating him on how he coaches this years team that is the youngest team in the country, that just lost their entire backcourt. So, I feel he certainly can coach.
Recruiting does need to improve. This season has been a dispointment because not enough of the talent has emerged, at the critical 2G and 3G positions. All coaches have had bad recruiting years, as has been documented (Just look at our Junior and Senior classes). I think Sydney did a good job recruiting 2 years ago rebuilding our frontcourt, but he needs to get that special player at 2G./3G.
this years team that is the youngest team in the country....
During the Monmouth game, the ESPN3 announcers had said that Monmouth (10-15)(4-10) was the youngest team in the MAAC this season with 8 freshman, 4 sophomores and no seniors while the Stags (5-19)(2-11) have 4 freshman, 6 sophomores and one senior.

He hasn't gone to the NCAAs here. Its a different type of league, different type of player. SJ wrecked the team this year - a down year should be 200 RPI, not 300. He underachieved the prior two years - EC left a loaded upperclassman team - SJs job was to not screw that up. Patsos outcoached him in the finals-. The CIT is a joke. He hasn't brought in a Needham/Todd/Han. He's almost non-existent as a representative of the school. He hasn't closed on an "up" recruit.
