RF, I think you are correct. Negativity just feeds on itself, can gather momentum and become its own potent instrument. We really have no where to go but up. No playing time or starting position is guaranteed. The coaching staff has to go back to square one. That means just going from a bad MAAC team to a good one. The off season is VERY important. Back to basics - defense; free throws; lay ups; rotation of the ball without turning it over; taking uncontested shots as opposed to forcing up bricks with opponents all over you, etc. Unfortunately, it also means going to a OOC schedule that has teams we can beat (sorry, at least have a shot of beating). Let me be clear - this is not forever. it is a necessary step to rebuild this program. And there is no one who hates that concept more than I do. But we need to get back to being a consistently good MAAC team first. We are a long way from being the 800 lb 'gorilla' team in the league - if we ever were.
If there is a silver lining to this very dark season, it is the fact the people who clamor for new on campus facility and argue the MAAC is not good enough for us, have gone into hibernation.
RE: the OOC schedule and dumbing it down - to me that's offensive. I expect all FU students and athletes to want to compete with the best. I don't want coaches / administrators / players who are afraid of anyone.

Are Hartford and Holy Cross teams that we "have a shot of beating" because we couldn't end up within 10 points of each of them this year on our home court?
I go back and forth on next year's OOC schedule. At times, I think it best to schedule games against teams that theoretically we have a pretty good chance of beating. After this year the team needs to get back into the habit of winning games. But if you go by this season's rpi rankings --- there aren't many of those teams that we would feel confident defeating available in the Northeast.
On the other hand, I'd like Doris to tell SJ that every OOC away game that we are not currently contractually obligated to play (e.g. at Albany) has to be a guarantee game where we receive the maximum amount of money possible in these games. That would allow us to recoup some of the lost revenue from the decreased attendance the past few seasons plus would generate some monies that could be used to buy out the remainder of Sydney's contract at the conclusion of next season should we once again lose a PIG as the lower seeded team.
A good OOC schedule should include traditional rivals, locals, regional games, some up games, and some travel. I think we should be in some sort of preseason or holiday tournament every year. Being part of the coaches vs. cancer tournament was a great thing for the program - playing Louisville gave the program national attention for a day. Other than that game, this years schedule wasn't outrageous.
Jeez, can we at least wait until we see what Degnan is before we start passing judgement on him good or bad. The kid tweeted how excited he is to play for Fairfield. Can we tone down the negativity just a little bit guys?
kevin degnan @degnan40 Feb 26 The fact that my next meaningful game will be in a Fairfield jersey is pretty exciting

I'm not passing judgement on KD. I don't know enough about him to make any real conclusion. We have posters who have seen him and are impressed. The recruiting services rank him as average. His final schools are all schools at our level. His game hopefully has improved since all of this took place and if he waited, he may have been able to get a higher level offer. If he had A10 offers, it was low level A10 and we should be able to compete with URI/Duquesne/Fordham type schools for players.
"Diamond in the rough", you know the term right? The under-recruited and perhaps under-developed players that mid-majors live for. Maybe we uncover a couple of these 2 star recruits who blossom into all-league players. Obviously we are not going to be recruiting players that UCONN or Syracuse are recruiting. If a player chooses Fairfield over a Rhode Island or a Fordham, then it's most likely because he wants immediate playing time all other things being considered. Take Fordham's Jon Severe or Rhody's E.C. Mathews for example, both outstanding freshmen in the A10. These guys are studs and could certainly have played at a higher level. You can add Saint Joseph's freshmen De'Andre Bembry to this list as well. Hopefully Degnan or Segura or Nelson or maybe all of them are diamonds in the rough.

Hawk, both of my son's went to St Joe's so I watch them a lot and I love Bembry, but I am not sure if he is a higher level player or a nightmare matchup for teams in the A10. Either way I would love one of our recruits to give our program the kind of shot in the arm he gives St. Joe's
