There might be quite a few players who are possibly pondering whether they would be better off continuing to play for Fairfield or to locate another school that will give them an athletic scholarship. To me, the player whose decision I'll be paying the most attention to is Steve Smith. If I recall correctly, he had said he chose Fairfield because he was excited by the vision of where SJ said SJ wanted to take the program.
So, after being a part of the team for a season --- it'll be interesting to see if Smith still trusts SJ to lead us to postseason success.
---I can laugh running man, but unfortunately if you like Fairfield BB what is going on is not so much a laughing matter---but maybe you, FU(I mean god) and some junior member who is probably in diapers and never played a sport see humor in this season. oh well more power to you ----remember boys its just a game. don't be so critical and lets not hold anybody accountable ---
If it were all volunteer, it would be a game. When they spend as much as they do., its a business. When they get the results that they have, its a failing business.
You really gotta lighten up. What made me smile was the use of the Sam Kinison performance video and as for the God classification that is on all the ProBoard message boards. If you have a problem with that for whatever reason then complain to ProBoards. It wasn't my idea nor does it bother me in the least. However, you soon will have a similar God classification yourself up from your current Senior Member classification.
I would agree with you in that I see no humor in this season of Stag Men's Basketball at all, especially with the coaching and it has been a record setting failure in far too many areas. I have played enough different sports but that should not be a criteria to have a passionate opinion here. I do find the comments, ideas and even the rantings from the Stag alumni and Stag fans interesting, often enlightening, sometimes WTF is he talking about, even clever and yes humorous at times.

FU ---I agree with you---Like you, I do not like personal attacks, no-one does I don't think---I have tried to limit my remarks about what I see about skills as a BB player and Coach, not them personally as people as I am sure they are all good people. But like most if I perceive I'm personally attacked I attack back--I don't care if people disagree with me, I never have. Hope I cleared it up---Peace

Great--I too, appreciate and respect yours and yes, everyone's opinion though it may differ from mine---we all want the Stags to win and are frustrated--but it will be better

i am a fan and a grad who has been reading this board for many years. I am also knowledgeable of the administration. This is the first time i have ever posted.
As a fan, i find the board very informative and entertaining. its great to have a core group of smart fans who care enough to debate the program on line.
I decided to post because i find some of the recent comments (albeit in response to our worst season ever) to be a bit over the top, especially with respect to the efforts of the administration, the school's finances and an on campus arena.
For example, someone just suggested that Fairfield doesn't have different standards than most of the other teams in the MAAC. Take a look at the Forbes rankings of the 600 or so colleges in the US. We are ranked 185. Quinnipiac is second at 265. Now that Loyola is gone, there is not another school in the MACC that comes close to that and most are not in the top 500, if they are rated at all. And we have a very high graduation rate, so in my opinion, we clearly have higher academic standards which translates to some degree into the hoop players we recruit and get into the school.
Someone also suggested that FVA has failed the program because he has not won a MAAC championship in his ten year tenor. Think about it. He fired O Toole and hired Cooley soon after joining Fairfield, a brilliant move by any measure. He kept Ed for 5 tears. Then he followed up with Syd. Virtually everyone heralded that move too, And we paid up for him. They re-upped him early to avoid losing him and based on his early reception and recruiting. That was a logical, aggressive move, and can you imagine what would have been said if we had lost him.
This year was a disaster and we cant afford another one like it. The jury is out on Syd but i believe there are reasons to have faith that he will turn it around. Don't get me wrong, he deserves lots of criticism and and scrutiny for losing 27 games in his third year. But honestly, the cupboard was bare after his first year. Ed didn't leave much other than Needham. AND, nobody wants him to succeed more than FVA and the administration. its important to the school and they know it.
I think Syd recruited his own guys based on his own playing and coaching experience and that he has been surprised by the difference between his young kids and the quality/toughness/strength of the kids in the MAAC. His mistake and he has to adjust. Second, i believe he overestimated some guys he was counting on this year and it killed him. But it appears that he is recruiting well and deserves some more time.

The cupboard was bare when Sydney arrived? Are you kidding me! I have bee a fan of the program for about 15 years now and that was by far the most talented team assembled over that span. Needham and Rakim Sanders are players that a school like Fairfield get once every 10 years or so and they were both on the same team. Olander and Nickerson were no slouches either, Sydney just used them wrong.
Sydney drastically underperformed with that team and many fans were upset at that time and told to calm down we still had a 20 win season. Sydney has been a disaster from day 1! Enough with this second chance shit. For Christ sakes hold someone accountable for something in today's society.
Hawk, both of my son's went to St Joe's so I watch them a lot and I love Bembry, but I am not sure if he is a higher level player or a nightmare matchup for teams in the A10. Either way I would love one of our recruits to give our program the kind of shot in the arm he gives St. Joe's
Been a St. Joe's fan for as long as I can remember. I get to a few games at Hagan or the Palestra every year. And Bembry is probably the best freshman the Hawks have had since Jameer Nelson. "Dr.Dre" is just getting started. He is already the best defensive player on the team and as you said a nightmare matchup on the offensive end. At 6'6" he can play SG or SF, but can also handle the point if needed. If De'Andre develops a more consistent jump shot, he'll be unstoppable.
Now that Loyola is gone, there is not another school in the MACC that comes close
US NEWS & WORLD REPORTS Best Colleges Rankings:
Regional Universities (North): MAAC Fairfield University #3 Marist College #10 Quinnipiac University #11 Manhattan College #17 Rider University #18 Canisius University #27 Monmouth University #30 Niagara University #54 Iona College #66 St. Peter's University #101
Welcome Old-school. This is supposedly a "competitive" D1 athletic program. Standards must be kept high. For all that the University has invested in this program, 2 straight years of PIG teams in the MAAC, should not be considered "ok". Things are shaping up next year for a 3rd straight PIG team. Sydney has drastically under-achieved. We can't settle for anything less in this league, than top tier year after year. No way we should be where we are. Lots of people to blame...
