10k vs. a few years ago is an increase but the increase is mainly due to the "common application" which allows for prospective students to check a box to apply to multiple schools.

The acceptance rate went down to 63% last year. We need to knock that under 50% and keep improving our test scores in order for Fairfield to get where it belongs - with the Villanova's and BC's of the world. Maybe we will get a visionary Fairfield president one day that is equally ambitious.

Fairfield is good to its own, especially Catholic school applicants and family members of those that attended. The perception of BC is not like that up here. Personally, I would love to see Fairfield get ranked highly but I don’t want them to do so at the expense of the families that have supported them in the past. If that means our "selectivity" doesn't get to BC's level, I'll be proud that we are more loyal.

In addition to lowering the acceptance rate, Fairfield needs to raise it's yield rate. The percentage of accepted applicants that enroll is a more telling indicator. Our yield is very low (15%) because we are accepting too many applicants that are not really interested in attending Fairfield.
BC 28% HC 31% VU 23% PC 18% FU 15%

If plenty of kids apply with good scores and grades, you don't start rejecting them for the sake of your numbers. That would be putting your school's reputation ahead of what is good for the kids. A truer measure would be to look at the scores and strength of the applicant pools, rather than only those enrolling. Our applications and our enrollment are growing in an era where small schools are/will be closing. Things are looking up at our alma mater in many ways.

Yield rate measures accepted applicants accepting Fairfield 's acceptance of them. (Say that 10 times fast!) It is a measure of accepted applicants opinion of Fairfield. It has nothing to do with Fairfield admissions rejecting applicants.

I was responding to your call to lower the acceptance rate.

I noticed that Quinnipiac is the only other MAAC school in US News North Region Top Ten. According to quinnipiac.edu under "at a glance" at the bottom and then "student body" they had over 22,000 applications for the enrolling freshmen class of 2015. This obviously more than doubles Fairfield's applications! How could this happen? Why is QU so popular? They also have a lot more students than FU.

I was responding to your call to lower the acceptance rate. Yes, fair enough. I need to clarify my comments. Fairfield is accepting too many applicants that are not really interested in attending as reflected in the high acceptance rate and low yield rate. I read this to mean that we have become the dreaded "safety school". "Let me apply to Fairfield because I know I can get in just in case I don't get into my top choices." I am not suggesting admissions reject more applicants, rather I am just suggesting the school do a better job of attracting applicants that really want to attend Fairfield as one of their top choices. We need more applicants that will accept if offered. Only then can they begin to lower the acceptance rate.

Fair point. My experience as a student applying was that BC and HC took top priority and people considered Fairfield or PC when those two either didn’t work out or didn't provide $. I even remember a friend of mine who applied to Dartmouth, Brown, Princeton, a few others, and Fairfield. He went to Brown. If we are in a national merit kid's conversation, things certainly aren't dire.
As a teacher, I still see the same thing happening, although I have seen an uptick in higher level students talking about Fairfield recently. I know this is anecdotal, but it seems that the visibility/awareness of the school is growing, largely from word of mouth.
From what I have heard, Catholic Memorial has used a strategy in recent years that awards scholarships to boys finishing in the 80th-90th percentile on the archdiocesan exam, rather than directly competing with BC High and Xaverian for boys in the top 10%. Though they don't generaly get the highest level student, they would still increase the overall quality of the school and incrementally improve over time. Food for thought.

I chose FU because it is a Catholic school. I have three friends who chose QU for various reasons. One wants to be a Physicians Assistant and their PA program is ranked fifth nationally by US News. One chose QU because she thought the campus is beautiful. Another chose QU because she said the sports teams are better. I just think that Fairfield is an awesome school and I wish it was more popular among college age kids. I am not sure what the answer is.
