The story has given us more publicity than basketball has for the last 20 years combined. To the credit of the University, it was dealt with immediately from the top down. Credit this time goes to FU PR and Father V. who I have criticized in the past for poor performance many times in this area. It is just a shame there is a feeling among white people that racism and bigotry in this country are fundamentally over. And the majority of the Supreme Court agrees by striking down laws like the Voting Rights Act, indicating oversight of voting in historically racist states is no longer required. What cocoon are they living in? And the majority of uniformed voters in the US have no idea this is happening or the impact on the rights of citizens. I hear people say President Obama has exacerbated race relations in this country. Well, I believe what his election has done is forced the bigots and racists out of the closet. Ok, off my soap box. GOOD JOB by the University handling this issue!

Its an extremely insensitive thing that these students did, and then its downright stupid to promote this on Social Media. Hopefully, the University can turn this into a learning experience by having these open forums to discuss the issues and just what happened.

College kids, FU not excluded, do jack-ass things. They all know better than to do what has been reported - they probably f'd up. They need to be scolded /yelled at /taken to task now. I have confidence that they will do better.

Now the real harm to the University begins...
Ellie Strayer @smelliestray 14m14 minutes ago @fairfieldu dissapointed I even applied this year & astounded at the events that took place A large public university like Oklahoma and Missouri can recover from incidents like this, however, a small private university has little room for error. Our institutional reputation, despite all the great work to improve diversity and the culture at the University, has taken a significant hit. Fairfield as a whole will be judged by the action of a few.

The biggest problem with this is that the admin had let it become news. Strong reprimands and making sure the incident was called isolated and insensitive was necessary. Make it known that harsh repercussions would follow for future incidents. Instead, they will pander to every group out there. We have good kids that f'd up and possibly went over the line. The message should be it was dealt with and to move on.

My read-The kids let a bad taste joke get out of hand. Very possible, but we weren't there and in this era of social media, sometimes the facts get lost. One supposed social media fact that gained some traction early on was that some students were in blackface. There is absolutely no evidence of this and the University has refuted this claim. Unfortunately, it is out there in social media as fact which is helping feed the current frenzy. Regardless, this type of insensitive event from students at an Jesuit institution of higher learning is terrible. The damage is done.

I think we let a minor incident become major. A stern "it's handled" response was warranted and that would have probably fixed the situation. Misguided leadership, imo, let it become an issue for entire school.

Mike wasn't at the party (so he says), but some of his friends were.
Let's hope this does not get out of control as some of the previous instances mentioned did. No one needs to be expelled or fired for this.
Not trying to knock the Mirror... but interviewing 3 freshman who probably did not attend the party fails to give us the true feelings of the students involved

A Message From The President email:
Dear Fairfield University Alumni, Parents and Friends –
Over the past two days, I presume that many of you have seen news reports about an incident that occurred over the weekend. As a university we are working diligently to understand the details of this event. I am personally aware of and sensitive to the potential impact this incident is having on our student body. I am personally committed to continuing to engage in critical dialogue that builds an inclusive community of learners from diverse social, economic, racial, cultural, national and religious backgrounds. Fairfield University is explicitly committed as a Jesuit and Catholic university to a culture that embraces and celebrates diversity. We actively encourage conversations and multi-cultural education programs that deepen our cultural competence.
Along with our formal and informal programming, this week the Office of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs will hold extended evening hours to discuss the incident with students and an open forum will take place this evening for students, faculty and staff. This past Monday, I sent a University-wide communication and we will continue to ensure that we maintain open dialogue as we move forward.
As members of the extended Fairfield community, I hope you will join me in my commitment to continue to build our cultural awareness. I welcome you to visit our University website to learn more about our Mission & Identity and Commitment to Diversity.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey P. von Arx, S.J. President

This is Bu@#Sh*%!! I am on the Trump Train! Too many people are worried about being politically incorrect. The ghetto is a backwards, screwed up place. It does tend to promote a silly, self-destructive culture. It is hilarious that these kids held a ghetto themed party. I would have loved to attended. I bet it was a good time! Political correctness is dumb. I am proud to be a rich Fairfield alum. The people who live in the ghetto should try to be successful like me. Vote for Trump in 2016!!

The Office of Student Diversity and Multicultural Affairs should spread the message, "Relax kids. Learn how to take a joke" and "Safe spaces deny freedom of speech." Under Trump, political correctness will become politically incorrect. Jump on the Trump Train baby!!

So sad in so many ways and definitely not hilarious. A pathetic and unenlightened boastful response from a fellow alum that apparently did not benefit from his Jesuit education.
