I believe that fellow members of the Fairfield University community were offended by what occurred and that their voices are being dismissed. I value every member of the community and we should respect their voices. I'll ask the same question again and ask you for a yes or no answer. Do you think the kids that held or attended the party are racist? |

I value every member of the community and we should respect their voices. I'll ask the same question again and ask you for a yes or no answer. Do you think the kids that held or attended the party are racist? I don't know what they were thinking. Do you? All I know is that members of the community were offended. Why can't you accept this? I want to know why they were offended and then I want the community to collectively respond appropriately. You seem to have formed an opinion without all the facts and dismissed the concerns of these members of the Fairfield University community. I believe this is irresponsible. |

It is impossible to know what went on at the party without being there or why those students even held a "ghetto party" in the first place but I doubt that those students are racists. IMO, this was insensitive, immature, unfunny, uncool but not racist. However, I personally find this sign to be offensive by someone who also doesn't know what went on at that party nor knows what is in the hearts and minds of the Fairfield University students nor knows what the Jesuit values or the teachings of St. Ignatius are. Stagophile- I ask the question because it I think it should be the basis for how one responds to this. If the kids are racists, get rid of them -there is no place for them at FU-it will destroy the school if they don't. If they are not, it's a teachable moment. So I'll ask you again, are the kids racists or not?
As far as what they were thinking, I don't think they were. That being said, if it was called a hip-hop party or rap party, I'm guessing everything at that party would be the same and there would have been no reaction to it.

Ophile - You are an idiot!! Why did you name yourself "Ophile?" That is questionable.
The "leftists, socialists, and race baiting racists" are the dumb asses in the photos who are protesting. They do not care what the facts are. They do not care about Fairfield university students. They only see an opportunity to protest so-called "white male privilege" and a higher-end primarily white university and are jumping at the chance! The woman holding up the sign referring to "Jesuit values" has probably never even read one page of the writings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola or even tried to complete his Spiritual Exercises. However, she is probably a regular viewer of MSNBC and either a pro-abortion Hillary or Sanders supporter. Saint Ignatius would have voted pro-life. I will not bow down to political correctness. |

That is what people do all the time and post it on Twitter and Message boards. That is a dangerous and irresponsible and unfortunately a sign of our times. I have to agree that if the community is offended by our actions, then we cannot dismiss their feelings. We have to understand what we did, and respond accordingly. We don't know any of the kids at the party, so even questioning if these kids are Racists or not, is irresponsible for us and for the people who are protesting in the Photo. |

Again, people offended by a group of teens and early twenty year olds, poking fun at a particular segment of society through an organized theme party, where there is, up until now, no proof of an involvement of a racial theme, IS much ado about nothing. The response was to the unfounded issue of people wearing "blackface" at the party and if it is NOT true, its a non story and those protesting need to find a more pressing issue. I'm sure they'll have no problem being offended by something quite quickly. Most importantly, to paraphrase Casper Weinberger, "where does the University go to get it "well deserved" reputation back?"

It also appears that some were more offended by the backlash on social media after the initial criticisms of the party. Unfortunately, I didn't get the sense that there was any common ground reached. Too often in today's society we become entrenched on our end of the spectrum and scream right past each other. I hope the students find a way to find that common ground so that they can heal the wounds and put this unfortunate incident behind us.

You've concluded based off heresay-shame on you for that. Based off my experience with FU students and graduates, I dont believe that they are racist. If anything, they acted Immaturely. You are correct that racism is a difficult issue but that's not what went on. IMO, You are exploiting a minor situation to feel morally superiors and that's a BS to do to good kids, our kids. I'm not tolerant of racists and said if the kids are that, get rid of them. I'm pretty sure that we don't have to get rid of anybody. |
