Quinnipiac Men's Hockey out draws Quinnipiac Men's Basketball. It will be interesting to see if that becomes the case with SHU Hockey and SHU Basketball. SHU Hockey tickets are $10-$20 and SHU Men's Basketball tickets are $10. Fairfield Men's Basketball tickets are $15-$75. Will the new SHU Martire Family Arena become more of an entertainment option for the local community's interest and dollars than MAAC Basketball at the Mahoney Arena?

I honestly wouldnt be that shocked, New England and Tri-state suburbs are big hockey markets.

Actually I'd be shocked if it didn't work out that way considering if the Pioneers get their act together quickly they could be competing for a national title in that sport similar to what the nation's current highly ranked team Quinnipiac is doing right now. This area is indeed a big hockey market, and with less competition for the fans of the sport to consider than basketball fans (such as nightly television of UConn and other nationally ranked hoop teams), a short drive to the Martire Arena will be an entertainment choice of many I think. I even plan to attend a game there myself before the season ends, as long as it doesn't conflict with a Stag basketball game of course. MAAC hardwood action at the Mahoney is still MY choice of entertainment!

Won't be hard, hockey (approx 800) at the Bpt arena already out draws bball (under 700) at the Pitt Center. .
Would think SHU hockey will pull in close to what Quinny gets which is just over 3,000/game. Granted Quinny has had great success.
does anyone know how many extra millions it cost to build an arena with an ice rink? I'd imagine its far more complex than just a building for basketball
that being said they spent 20 million more in the same town and time
Actually the “Leo” a basketball facility is more expensive on a cost per square foot basis then the SHU hockey rink. probably because at FF they needed to demo alumni hall first before building a new structure. FF - $51M/80k sq. Ft = $638 sq ft SHU- $70M/ 122k sq ft= $571 sq ft Go figure!

Now thats how you do an arena opening vs our opener of perennial power house St. Peters!
Uhm. They made the final 8.
And I don't think anyone is complaining how that evening went. Anyway, basketball and hockey are completely different when it comes to who you can invite to your 3,500 seat palace. Sure BC is a big "name" in the hockey world and a great get for SHU to help open their new building. But that said, obviously you couldn't bring in a Duke, a North Carolina or a Kentucky, nor could you bring in a Providence or even BC itself as a basketball opponent for obvious reasons. I'm sure the Pioneers will have a great night opening up their new facility just like the Stags did back in early December when the Peacocks came to town.

And it still is even after attending a game for the first time at the spectacular Martire Arena to see the Pioneers lose their contest to Army, 4-1. And like with the Mahoney, it's a beautiful building with not a bad seat in the house. SHU has not been a hockey power since they had a D-1 team. With this venue as a recruiting tool, certainly they, like the Stags in basketball, should have no excuses if they don't greatly improve in the coming years.

Feb 19 Taking in a home game with my boys today and am blown away by Fairfield U’s new barn. Can’t imagine there are many arenas + facilities at this level that are better than this, which is a massive upgrade from the previous setup.
