What year is Gianni Mirobello from Northwest Catholic in. Appears to be an excellent shooter. Small right now but looks like he has a bright future.
Gianni, who I'm 99% sure is the son of coach John Mirabello, is a sophomore. He is indeed small right now (5-7 on the roster sheet), so I would hope he could grow a couple or more inches in order to become a future college player possibly stretching to the D-1 level. Anyway whether he grows to that level or not, certainly he is an excellent shooter with a bright future for his remaining high school years as well as the prospect of playing at some level after that. And BTW, considering his family connection, it wouldn't surprise me if coaching was a major part of his life after he gets done playing ball.

There is a great (and long) article in the C. Post today about the very strong sophomore class of players in the CIAC. And for those who think this doesn't matter in regards with connecting to Fairfield, well the fact is based on some of the projections in this piece, quite a few of these players might very well become D-1 recruits in a year or two. Indeed concerning some of the kids mentioned, I can vouch for the accuracy of statements about them by the writer Joe Morelli (the state's #1 HS reporter), at least for those I have seen in person. But of this group based on only those who I have witnessed, Tyler Betsey of Windsor, Riley Fox of Conard, Tajae Jones of NDWH and Dylan Veillette of Ridgefield deserve special attention. I would hope that given the commitment of the state's current second best player in Matty Curtis, more local recruiting success could be right around the corner for the Stags. I would appreciate it (as I have before) if someone could post this article. Well worth reading IMO.

Fairfield Prep, who quietly has been having one of their best years in school history, tonight won a state D-1 quarter-final match-up with NFA on a buzzer beating 3-point shot by junior Ryan Preisano. The Jesuits actually made up a 5 point deficit in the last minute, and it was mostly because of Preisano. Not only did he hit the game-winner but he also made two other 3s just before that. Almost a full house at Warde, and needless to say, the "Bomb Squad" (Prep students) stormed the court. Up next is a semi-final contest against East Catholic on Wednesday night with the winner getting a trip to Mohegan Sun for the championship game against the winner of the match between Notre Dame-West Haven and Windsor.

Don’t know for sure but believe that’s former assistant coach Tyson Wheeler’s son who hit the game winning free throw for the overtime St. Bernard win over Bassick. Does anyone on the board know if it is Tyson’s son?

Preisano’s game winner and the court storming apparently was #1 on espn’s top ten last night.
Extra points to whoever at ESPN managed to have the #1 play of the day occur while the scroll at the bottom of the screen is listing our women’s team game against Texas.

Hey that's great! I guess in the advertisement business they call that "subliminal" messaging, right? Anyway that aside, considering this play made ESPN's #1 obviously adds to the level of excitement for the great finish to this game. Moving forward, Prep has a legit chance to defeat East Catholic who is not nearly as dominant as they have been the last five years or so. One game at a time of course, but I wouldn't want to see NDWH in the final if I were Prep. But win or lose, this has been a remarkable year for this team which really doesn't have any stud players or guys who I would consider future D-1 recruits. What they do have however is a great coach in Mike Papale who gets the most out of his troops in playing together as a team. He should be in the running for COY honors I would imagine.

The biggest game of the year is finally here tonight, #1 Bristol Central and Donovan Clingan vs. #2 Northwest Catholic and our own recruit Matty Curtis leading the way in what is considered a toss-up in a poll of state coaches who were asked to pick a winner. (10-10 was the result) Certainly with BC riding a 42 game winning streak including defeating NW two weeks ago, it would be a major accomplishment if the Lions were able to pull off what I would consider an upset. But that said, Wilton, with much less talent than NW, was able to take the Rams to OT in their semi-final match-up by playing the big guy with 2 people at all times and not letting him get to the basket. That was the first time I had ever watched him where he didn't get so much as one dunk. Of course he went to the foul line a lot and still got 30 points, but he missed a lot too (16-27). The big thing though is that man for man other than Clingan, NW has the clear advantage. And with that as a foundational fact, the key very well might come down to Curtis having an exceptional performance such as he was able to have in a couple of recent important games (including the last meeting with BC). Of course the other thing that could really tip the balance would be getting Donovan in foul trouble. This should be an exciting evening for the thousands of people expected to be on hand at the Mohegan Sun Arena.

Tough night for Curtis and NWC as they could never get going in their 56-36 loss to Donovan and BC. The truth is the big guy was so awesome in defending the area near the basket that the Lions were forced to take all kind of contested shots which really didn't have much chance of going in. Matty scored 15 points, but to be honest it took a lot of shots to get to that total as he was constantly hounded by UConn bound and Gatorade football player of the year Victor Rosa who was physical and in his face all night. Actually Matt got by his main defender quite a few times, but when he did, guess who was waiting for him? And it also didn't help that no one else on Northwest could score much even with less defensive attention. Despite this tough ending my thoughts about his potential as a Stag haven't changed one bit as I wait to hear whether he is actually coming here next season as opposed to going to St. Thomas More for a post grad year of prep ball. BTW for those that are interested, as far as I know both Matty and Donovan are scheduled to be playing in the JCC Classic All-Star game against New Jersey on (I believe) Sunday, April 10th at the Shehan Center in Bridgeport. I will post further details as soon as that information is confirmed.
Top seed in DivisionIII, Kolbe Cathedral, is beaten in today’s championship game at Mohegan Sun by Hand of Madison 56-39.
And East Catholic wins another title by upsetting NDWH by 1 point in Division 1. EC knows how to get it done lately, although to be frank, if they were in the same division as Bristol Central they wouldn't have won. Another season in the books.
