St. Joseph has hired a new coach in Jeff Bernardi, a guy who has had quite a successful eight year run at East Lyme HS. He will become only the fifth head coach in the school's history (after-all Vito Montelli stuck around for over 50 years), and on paper this looks like a great hire. Only 37 years old, maybe he could be the one to help the program return to elite status again, something that kind of has gone away since the legendary Montelli retired a decade ago.
The CIAC will be implementing a 35 second shot clock for the ‘23-‘24 season for varsity games.
FINALLY! Great to hear of course. Hopefully this is in some small way a start to the CIAC being able to hold onto some of their most talented players through all the four years they are eligible to play for their schools. Not too many guys such as Donovan Clingan around (or Matty Curtis for that matter) who stayed rather than left for the perceived greener pastures of the prep school circuit. Now that said, a POST-grad year such as Curtis is doing this season sometimes makes an awful lot of sense. But the bottom line should be to keep the good ones around. Now the next thing that might help would be lifting the rules for coaches that keep them from working with their kids in the off-season, and also being allowed more scheduled games in-season than the strict limit of 20 as it currently stands right now. Anyway this is good news for those who care about high school basketball in the state of Connecticut.
When nonAAA teams play at AAA courts, the two teams will agree on the 3 point line distance to be used for that game.
When AAA teams play at nonAAA courts, the home team's 3 point line will be used.
Classes AA - D:
1. AA Games are 36 minutes in length with two 18 minutes halves (OT is 4 minutes).
A-D Games are 32 minutes in length with two 16 minutes halves (OT is 4 minutes).
When cross-class games are played, the length of the game will comply with the home team's rules (unless local conference rules say otherwise).
2. A 30-second shot clock is used. Additionally, we play according the NCAA rule for the shot clock in regards to a kicked-ball: the shot clock does not reset if there is more than 14 seconds remaining, if anything less than 14 seconds remains, the shot clock will be reset to 14 seconds after the kick.
3. 4 full (60 seconds each) and 2 30-second time-outs are available during regulation play.
4. During a free throw, the low blocks will not be occupied, and players along the sides of the lane can move on the release of the ball. The shooter and players behind the 3-point arc must hold their positions and may not cross the foul line (or foul line extended) until the ball hits the rim.
5. The game clock does not stop on made baskets at any time.
6. There is a 10 second rule for getting the ball over half court.
With so much of the CIAC talent going to NEPSAC schools to improve their game and improve the likelihood of getting a D1 scholarship, I thought I should mention a former CIAC player who seems to be doing quite well his freshman year. Donovan Clingan was named the MVP of the Phil Knight Invitational in Oregon, which had many of the nation’s top teams participating to celebrate the head of Nike’s 85th birthday.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Donovan Clingan, Connecticut, C, Fr. – Clingan was named Most Valuable Player in the Phil Knight Invitational while helping UConn beat Iowa State 71-53 with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the final. For the three games, which also included wins over Alabama and Oregon, he shot 61.1 percent from the floor and averaged 1.7 blocks.
Clingan was considered the 54th highest rated recruit in the country last year, which led one national writer to state during the PKI —I can’t believe there are 53 better freshmen in the country than this kid.

Not only the writer's opinion that caught the attention of hoop fans around the nation, but also of note for those who happened to watch all three games which the Huskies participated in, particularly the final one against Iowa State, Bill Walton was effusive in his praise for Clingan. Certainly as a guy who gets less than 20 minutes a game so far as a backup to Adama Sanogo, already establishing himself as a big-time player at a national level is quite an accomplishment for this kid who as you say, never left the CIAC for greener pastures, thereby proving you don't have to go to a NEPSAC school to become a highly recruited guy. The fact is Donovan remained true to his word when he said publicly midway through his high school career when it was becoming obvious he would be a star, that he was going to remain at Bristol Central for all four years of eligibility. He stayed true to his word (how often does that happen nowadays), and therefore became one of the greatest players to ever come out of the state of Connecticut! A career in its infant stages, but one certainly worth keeping an eye on I would say.
Of the three schools listed expressing interest, only Bryant has offered him a scholarship so far according to verbalcommits. However, VC lists him as a 6’3” SG from Hartford playing for Springfield Commonwealth Academy. Also, not sure if the 42 points was in a game or a scrimmage.
