Is there an internal rule which prohibits making offers to any player rated other than two stars? Now, before the Fairfield Faithful unload on me that the rating system is not helpful, maybe useless, in evaluating overall talent, I get that. But, even the SAT used to have a purpose. It was a starting point to assess the academic strength of a candidate. If we assume the star ranking has a similar, one dimensional appraisal value, what reason is there which prevents an offer from the Stags to one of those ballers ranked above 2 stars? The Power Five cannot possibly take all five and four star players. As I said before, we need to improve in all areas and that begins by recruiting up!

We are talking about guys who just finished their Sophomore year and are "rising juniors". Very good chance these guys become 4/5 stars which then they will not be on Fairfield's radar but this early unless you're clear cut top 50/75 player you wont get over a 2 star because it is too early.

Have to take the ratings with a grain of salt. I tend to look at who else is looking at/offering the player. If higher-level programs are giving the kid a look, then that's a good thing.
Getting a recruit to choose Fairfield over UConn is better than getting someone to choose Fairfield over Central Conn. Harder to do, but probably a better barometer of a kid's talent level.

Ivan Renko was a 4 star recruit out of high school on multiple rating sites, and the only issue with the rating was that there was no such player and consequently no one had ever seen him play. So there are some limitations to the ratings . I do agree the rating are a good starting point for a discussion, but at the mid-major level, the key to success is often in evaluation and getting guys that are underrated by these services. I believe Shane Richards who became all-MAAC senior year was a 1 star out of high school. Greg Francis, a 2-star out of high school (underrated in my opinion). So getting the "high 2 star player" who has upside to develop is often the key for a mid-major. Not saying we shouldn't shoot high, just saying midmajor do need to recruit guys that will develop.

This tweet seems to support RF’s claim that the key is to get guys who are underrated by the services.
Although Curry was a 3 star recruit (same as Johns) and not, at present, a 2 star recruit like all those verbalcommits shows we offered on June 15th.

This really highlights the challenge for the mid-majors. If you found the next Curry, chances are you may only hang on to him for one or two seasons. Guess that’s better than not getting them at all. The new world dictates a blend of the right transfers moving down and those “diamonds in the rough.”

Shane Richards a 1 star? I've got to admit I've never heard of that before as it seems to me the basic 2 star is the rating number that 95% of D-1 mid-major players get labeled in high school. Anyway like you say, Greg Francis was a 2 as was Tyler Nelson BTW. Maybe even Derek Needham for all I know. So you're right, getting the guys with upside who can be coached up and fit a system is the key to recruiting at the MM level. Now that said, since it is so unusual for the Stags and similar programs to acquire anyone with a higher rating, well guess what (in regards to the Stags), we currently have two players coming in who fit that category in Goodine and John's Jr., so that should be something to be happy about should it not? And speaking of Goodine, with the new system of the transfer portal taking precedence, perhaps we are about to see quite a few more higher than 2s as part of a routine roster makeup. Anyway it's never a bad thing to offer kids early who may become good or better in the future. Even if only one or two a year pan out, that could be a difference-maker at some point in time.

Yeah. It's an adjustment for the players and coaches. Still... it's the same number of roster spots in CBB and same number of players on the floor. People will have to figure out what's best. Few want to ride the pine - even at a higher level.

I think this kid will play higher than the MAAC, but I'm glad we offered. He averaged 25 ppg as a sophomore at Conard HS in West Hartford, and led his team to the state D2 semifinals, where Conard lost to Matt Curtis and NW Catholic. He's 6-5 right now with time to grow. I'm sure Nashville can expound on his talents.

Well I did watch him in action against Matt Curtis this year in a CCC league tournament game and was very impressed. Certainly at the very least he is on par with where Curtis was as a sophomore a couple of years ago. But that said, his extra height (about 2 inches taller and growing) and maybe better athleticism will make him an even better prospect than Matty is right now in a couple of years. Another outstanding student (just like Matt), this kid bears watching, and certainly I am glad Fairfield is getting in on the action with regards to offering before he blows up in the next year or so. I just hope he stays at Conard throughout his whole high school career as opposed to transferring to a prep school. But that's just the bias in me as a state scholastic proponent. Either way, if he becomes a Stag down the road, I've got a feeling this offer will have been the right thing to do when we look back in a couple of years.
