It is embarrassing to come onto this site and see these comments. And some of you should check your facts before posting. Going back to other threads... We need Jamel Fields... Everyone failed to mention he averages 2.5 ppg this season. And now Sydney Johnson, does anyone know his credentials. To call him an inept basketball coach is absolutely ridiculous. Last time I checked nobody on this board coached in the ncaa tournament (almost beat kentucky), made it to the maac championship (and beat an iona team that nobody could beat that year), played overseas for 7 seasons, and was rated one of the best coaches under 40 a few seasons ago. He has struggled through two injury plaqued seasons, with a young team. If you don't like Fairfield basketball it's fine, but don't come on here and bash them and don't show up to games. The program doesn't need you.
The above post shows a complete misunderstanding of basic facts.
1) Jamel Fields averages 2.5 points per games because he plays for a St. Peters team that has two legitimate guards. Jamel is a back-up at SPC and would be a back-up on most Maac teams but would have started last year at Fairfield because he was significantly better than anyone Sydney put on the floor. That is why we needed fields, because he was better than anyone Sydney could recruit. Regarding this year, Fields would have already graduated.
And now Sydney Johnson, does anyone know his credentials.
2) Yeah, I know his credentials let me reiterate them for you: He has a career coaching record that is below 500 - 121–129 (.484) His teams have finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 10th and likely 11th this season At Princeton, he had 2 winning seasons and 2 losing seasons. At Fairfield he had 2 winning seasons and 2 losing seasons. He is the first coach in Fairfield history to have back to back seasons with 8 game losing streaks. He coached the Lowest Scoring game in Fairfield history vs. Manhattan 31 points. 3/2/2013 Largest margin of defeat in school history 50 points, 109-59 vs. Duke 11/15/2014 Fewest points in a half, 12 vs. Wofford 11/21/2014 Fewest wins in a season for Fairfield, 7 (in Division I era). 2013-2014 Most losses in a season 25 2013-2014 Fewest field goals in a game, 9 Versus Wofford (1 more than the lowest ever in any NCAA game set in 1940) 11/21/2014 – Lowest winning percentage 23.3% in school history 2013-2014
He has struggled through two injury plaqued seasons, with a young team..
3. What a croc. First, he has not struggled through two injury plagued seasons. What injuries? Besides Sidibe what player has missed significant time due to injury? What all-maac player has been out of the line-up as a result of injury that has kept us from winning? This is simply an excuse. Fact is, this team has had no more injuries and in fact fewer injuries that most of the teams in front of us. Are you saying that the injury to segura kept us from winning the two games his missed? We were something like 0-13 in the games he started. The injury excuse is utter nonsense
We are a young team. This statement is actually completely untrue. Last year a poster took the time to examine all the rosters in the Maac. While I don't have that post in front of me, apparently there were something like 4 Maac teams that were on average younger than Fairfield. All 4 teams finished ahead of Fairfield. Regarding this year Here's the breakdown: Players / years of college level experience Gilbert, Marcus.... 3 Nelson, Tyler...... 1 Kirkland, Mike.....3 21 Sidibe, Amadou...3 01 Segura, Jerome...1 20 Rose, K.J........2 23 Johnston, Steve..4 35 Johnson, Coleman 3 05 Threatt, Demarcus.3 40 Degnan, Kevin.....1 25 Smith, Steve......2 24 Chapell, Doug.....2 44 Gilbert, Malcolm..4 More than half the players at Fairfield (7) are in their junior or senior year with regards to number of years of college level playing and practice experience. How is this a young team? Because we have three freshman? Doesn't nearly every team in the conference have at least 3 freshman on their roster? Please explain what makes this a young team?

PS - Didn't we just lose to Niagara? They have no seniors and only 1 junior on the roster. They are legitimately a young team. What was our excuse for losing that game?
Niagara players Years of exp. Cameron Fowler 2 R-So. Emile Blackman 2 R-So. Rayvon Harris 3 R-Jr. DayJar Dickson 1 Fr. Wesley Myers 2 So. Ramone Snowden 2 So. Karonn Davis 1 R-Fr. Matt Scott 1 Fr. James Suber 1 Fr. Julian Richardson 1 Fr. Dominique Reid 2 R-Fr. David Varoli 2 So. Thomas Fleming 2 R-So.
Niagara 1.69 Average years of experience Fairfield 2.46 Average years of experience
Stag 13 is related to Joestag, so be nice to him. I hope he truly doesn't mean what he posted. I'm gonna take his comments as a joke. Hopefully, this nightmare ends in a week and we can turn the page. Syd gets an F as coach of FU. I don't care what he did before he got here. He has lost whatever mojo he used to have. Next...

Thanks to all the board members who were kind enough to point the facts out to the few posters running on emotion. Emotion is when your heart prevents you from seeing the facts and allows you to accept/believe all the excuses we have heard over the past years to rationalize this slow descent into basketball hell. Too young, too slow, too short, too inexperienced, too tired, too hurt, poor shooting, poor execution, etc. In the end, the facts point to players who are not "all-MAAC" caliber (thanks to JS for providing the measuring stick there) led by a coach who has not improved the players or the program over his tenure. My point was the person closest to the situation is not a fan, but the captain of the ship (and a former b-ball coach) - the AD. If he is asleep at the wheel, he needs to be held accountable for permitting the decline. And if he fully engaged, then his judgment must be questioned at this stage of the proceedings.
This is Div-1 athletics, folks. This is a business. There are several board members who are in business and understand how it works. And in our corner of the world, it is measured in wins and losses, MAAC championships and NCAA appearances (wins if you are any other school - we settle for just being invited to be a first round punching bag). If we were to use Jack Welch's critique model, how many would rate the current coach an A - would you consider him to be the linchpin of the program; would losing him be a major setback; is he a top tier coach that other schools would love to have? Or is he a C coach, one who thinks he is an A coach but would be better off in another organization (school) where he can become an A coach?
Of course, if you do not think or believe Div-1 college athletics is a business or one that you do not want to be in, fine. Petition to move to D-3 and stop putting all this time, money, blood, sweat and tears into this program.
In the final analysis, if you take the emotion out of the equation, one is left with a program in a downward spiral. Time to make a change. Use the old line about wanting to take the program in a different direction (that works for many other schools). But no more of the same old story, same old song and dance, my friend.
It's not a business even if there is a good deal of money involved and it serves to promote the university, which also is not a business. Of course wins and the lack of them matter more than anything else and will figure prominently in this coach's evaluation, but there are other factors. And hasn't Jack been found to be a bit of a joke anyway.
Stag 79 and Stag 13, who on the coaching staff are you related to, because you are the biggest shills I have ever heard. Please identify yourself so it will become more understandable.
Stag 79, I'm not attacking your views. They just completely have no merit based on what has happened the last 2 years. If Sydney worked for you the last 2 years and you were paying him $460K a year to win games, would you retain him???
Read my post. I'm not saying money and wins aren't involved. Of course they are. Just said, even with that, let's not call it a business cause it's not.
The decision to retain SJ may be based on what seems to be ahead in terms of recruiting, coaching changes, player development. If he stays, and indeed he may, things will have to look different.
This fan base has such thin skin. How do you survive in today's dog eat dog world??? Every industry in this world is so cut-throat that you must either produce results or you lose. That's reality. No room for third and fourth chances...
