Monmouth looks good, new power in the league. Wagner can be beaten by the stags, Monmouth cannot.
Canisius beat Monmouth by 10 in their MAAC opener. Since we have no chance against Monmouth in your estimation, should we automatically expect 2 losses against Canisius?
I watched about a half of the Wagner game vs Monmouth. Overall they can be described as a very athletic and quick team. But, 4 specific things stood out about them were:
- They played an aggressive defense, and really played hard
- They battled for 50-50 loose balls. I looked them up on Pomeroy and saw they are 12th in the nation in steal%, and 15th in forcing turnovers
- All 5 players take it to the hoop aggressively; hence, they turn it over a lot (335th worst)
- They are very inconsistent shooters….. hot streaks and droughts. Overall below average shooting
They are 5-3 and will win a lot of games in the NEC, but are probably bottom 5 in the MAAC. Dangerous team if they win the 50-50 loose balls.

Didn't see the game nor have I watched them this year, but I will say that in looking at their stats, they look a lot like Quinnipiac in many ways. Like you say, yes, below average shooting, way below from 3Pt. land. Only a couple of threats there normally. All games are different of course, you never know who will step out of the scouting report and go off on a hot streak so obviously you can't assume anything. Also, terrible assist/TO ratio. But like the Q. they out rebound their opponents by quite a lot. And yes, they do steal the ball. Do they press full court JS? Also I wonder how quick they play as they only average around 65 PPG with only a couple of players being real scoring threats most nights? But anyway it sounds like a decent performance by the Stags in handling the pressure along with reasonable shooting, plus holding their own on the boards, that should do the trick. I do worry about the start, a couple weeks off could lead to a little rust. And of course, Marcus. Hopefully he will be ready to go! I'm sure we will find that out tomorrow.

I have no idea about Canisius, i have not seen them play at all. Mommouth lost to Canisius in buffalo, a tough place to win for any team on the road. I have seen monmouth play 3x and I think they are better then the stags. We will know for certain on 1/11.

They did full court press, but they "half court pressed" even more. They reminded me of how Tyquan Goode defended….. if ball handler was 25 feet way, he would pressure him back to 26, 28, 30, 32 feet. They also overplayed the off-the-ball offensive players. We need to have a "Smart Passing" game and burn them back door.
Nash, comparing the rebounding of Wagner to Quinnipiac is a good comparison; However, the difference is that QU is more brute force, while Wagner is using their quickness to get 50-50 loose balls.

Be very interested in this game because if somehow the Hawks can pull this one off I would think they could be in a position for at large consideration to the NCAA Tournament at the end of the year if they fail in the MAAC tourney. But for this to happen they would have to win all the rest of the OOC games plus be 1st or 2nd in the regular league season. Even then they would probably have to reach the final or at least the semi-final for this to occur. Very unusual for any league member to ever be in the running for such a thing. Even Iona with all their dominance lately has not been able to get the real big non-league wins that were needed to get into this position. And BTW it's certainly great they sold out their place Sunday. But what's even more impressive is that was their FIRST and ONLY home game that will be played there until after the start of the new year! That should impress the committee even more if indeed they are in this spot in early March. I wonder if Joe Lunardi would think the same thing?
