That Lasalle-Loyola Marymount shootout in 1990 (121-116) is still the most entertaining basketball game I have ever witnessed. Lionel Simmons and Doug Overton vs. Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers – all 4 from Philly.
I was working Xavier Sports information that season, Loyola Marymount came to Cincinnati and Xavier nipped them 115-113. Yeah, pretty entertaining.
Was talking to Bo Kimble after the game and he was telling me about his friendship with Simmons. Holy cow, Kimble and Gathers averaged combined 64 points a game that season?!

Those two were the most important components in the offensive scheme of Paul Westhead's running LMU squad which thrilled and excited the Nation for a few years. To this day though in thinking back to that team, it's a shame that near the end of the run Gathers lost his life when he collapsed on the court with cardiac arrest and died later that evening. But back to what you saw in person when they played Xavier that night, actually that type of game and the way it was played was kind of routine for any contest involving LMU because Westhead wanted shots quickly with defense quite often optional for the most part. Looks like you had a great win to celebrate considering Loyola's style enabled them to be a constant Top 25 rated team in that period of time. Finally though, I love the reference to Simmons who certainly has been the most accomplished player ever to play in the MAAC. In fact Fairfield as an underdog was able to defeat his LaSalle team in the first round of the league tournament in 1987 when he was only a freshman. I don't believe we ever beat him again however.

Always confused as to how these predictive metric sites establish preseason baselines for teams; but from that preseason baseline we’re the 24th most pleasant surprise by using efficiency margins among the 362 D1 teams while Siena is the most disappointing D1 team in the country —- according to Haslam.
The opening round game between Niagara and Siena ended at 1:11am after starting at 11:14pm. New MAAC Commissioner Tellitocci wants to prevent that from happening in the future.
From the TimesUnion article:
At a regularly scheduled meeting on Wednesday, MAAC athletic directors discussed changes in tournament format that would prevent that from happening again, according to Tellitocci in a wide-ranging interview… “In terms of playing six games in a day, I don’t know of any other conference that plays that many games in one day,” said Tellitocci, a Marist graduate who was most recently assistant commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. “The norm that you see is four, so I think as we’re looking at new formats with two teams coming into the league, my preference would be to play no more than four games in one day. From a student athlete experience standpoint, tipping off at 11:15 at night is not good.”
Other statements in the article: MAAC will only play a 20 game schedule next year even with 13 teams. Play 8 teams twice and 4 teams once, taking proximity and rivalries into consideration. Tellitocci wants championship games to be played on a weekday. Maybe only top 10 teams qualify for MAAC tournaments next year. MAAC wants to keep both men’s and women’s tournaments at the same location. Atlantic City has MAAC tournament through 2026. Between New Jersey wrestling championships and tv contracts — there are obstacles which need to be overcome.

Bad idea to keep holding both tourneys at the same site. Like I suggested in another thread, move the women's tourney to the Westchester Center in White Plains, NY, where the WNBA Liberty used to play. Perfect size venue for the ladies tourney.
As far as Atlantic City, get out of this contract now! The empty seats are embarrassing. Move the 2025 tourney to Bridgeport now that there's 3 MAAC teams in the area who can co-host it.
