Fairfield (#7) (23-12, 14-6, MAAC) VS Seattle (#3) (21-14 )
Tuesday, March 26, 2024 • 9:00 PM EST
Daytona Beach, FL
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the second all time meeting between Fairfield and Seattle. The Stags lost their only outing 83-80 versus the Red Hawks in 2018. Netfali Alvares paced the Stags with 16 points, while Jesuse Cruz added 13 points and Landon Taliaferro 12 points in the loss. The Stags made an inspired comeback down by double digits in the final five minutes, Felix Lemetti connected on a 3-pointer, Wassef Methnani hit four free throws, and Landon Taliaferro a 3 to cap a 10-1 run to pull the Stags to 81-80 with 43 seconds remaining. Seattle ran the clock down to 21 seconds and missed his jump shot, but was fouled. He then made two free throws to seal the victory as the Stags missed on their final possession.

Overall the Stags are 10-18 in post season games. SEATTLE UNIVERSITY REDHAWKS
Seattle University was first known as the Maroons but efforts to adopt a new name and logo date back to 1938, when Ed Donohoe, who covered sports for the university's student newspaper, The Spectator, called for a new name. Donohoe was fed up with the name, "The Maroons," as he felt the team was not actually stuck on an Island. He also hated that opponents would debase the name to "Morons" or "The Marooned," so he began calling the team "Chieftains" in his stories. He chose this name as the City of Seattle was named after a Squamish Chieftan surprisingly named of all things Chief Seattle. While at first, Jesuit leadership was squeamish about a name change, eventually, realizing that all the really good names like Stags and Peacocks would probably be taken by better Jesuit schools, decided Donohoe was chiefly correct and began to embrace the name Chieftains.
As great as the Chieftain name was though, after a good long 60 year run, once again, calls began being made to consider a new name. While it is OK for the school and city to be named after Chief Seattle, certainly the name Chieftain is a racist and a wholly inappropriate mascot. Mark Burnett, Director of Alumni Relations, says his office asked alumni for comments about changing the mascot and generally speaking, "Nobody cares." Nancy Gerou, athletic director at SU, collected 20 possible new names and mascots, stating that the university wants to go with "an object or animal." The school ruled out playing as the Jesuits because, "people can't rally around a name that might be perceived as offensive." The name "titanics" was recommended by one student who felt the name tied in perfectly with the original name Maroons and with the Jesuits involvement in the sinking of the Titanic. Another student suggestion was "The Elves." However elves didn't make the short list, and regarding "the Titanics" leadership stated that "that ship has sailed." Ultimately "the Jesuits" selected the name RedHawks ahead of other finalists that included Chinooks, Storm and Riptides. As many people know, Red Hawks is an ideal name as the Red Hawks were an Indian tribe within the Miwok Indians, and also the name of a famous Indian Chieftain from the Sioux Tribe. Despite these facts, everyone at Seattle University is pleased they have finally disassociated the university's mascot with Native American tribes and culture.
SEATTLE POSTSEASON HISTORY
• Seattle U holds a 29-24 record in all Division I postseason competitions following wins over Evansville and Delaware State in the first two rounds of the 2024 Ro CBI.
• The win over the Hornets was the first postseason win since 2016.
• In the program's modern-day DI history, the Redhawks are 5-4 in five postseason appearances. That includes four CBI tournaments as well as one appearance in the CIT.
• In 2018-19, the Redhawks accepted a berth to the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, dropping a close 73-68 decision to Presbyterian in the first round.
• In 2017-18, Seattle U competed in the CBI for the third time in four years, falling 93-90 in overtime to Central Arkansas in the first round.
• In 2015-16, the Redhawks returned to play in the CBI, earning a home win over Idaho (68-63) before losing to Vermont (73-54) in the quarterfinals.
• In 2014-15, after the team's run to the final of the WAC Tournament, Seattle U competed in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI), defeating Pepperdine (62-45) and Colorado (72-65) before falling 63-48 to Loyola Chicago in the tournament semifinals.
• Seattle U's first postseason tournament was the 1951 National Catholic Invitation Tournament, held in Albany, N.Y. Seattle U defeated Iona (69-67) and Mount St. Mary's (102-85) before losing to St. Francis (N.Y.) in the title game, 93-79. Seattle U made two appearances in the National Invitational Tournament, losing to Holy Cross in 1952 and to St. Bonaventure in 1957. From 1953 through 1969, Seattle University advanced to the NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament 11 times, a remarkable feat for an independent school to continually receive at-large berths into fields of 16 to 25 teams. The pinnacle of Seattle University's NCAA Tournament history came in 1958, with a dramatic run to the national title game before losing to the University of Kentucky.
SCHOOL HISTORY
The Seattle Redhawks men's basketball team represents Seattle University in NCAA Division I basketball competition. Established in 1946, the team was previously known as the Seattle Chieftains. The program experienced success during the 1950s and 1960s, reaching the NCAA Division I tournament eleven times. Led by Elgin Baylor (the future 1958 number one draft pick), Seattle finished as the runner-up in the 1958 NCAA University Division basketball tournament.
ABOUT THE REDHAWKS
• Seattle U opened the 2024 CBI with a 79-66 win over Delaware State, marking its 20th win of the season. The Redhawks now have three straight seasons with 20 wins or more, the first such streak since 1956-57, 1957-58, 1958-59.
• Alex Schumacher dished seven dimes versus Delaware State, bringing his season total to 174 which ranks No. 4 in Seattle U's single-season record book.
• Cameron Tyson had 19 points versus Delaware State, including five threes, bringing his season total to 102. The single-season total ranks No. 4 in Seattle U's single-season record book.
• Kobe Williamson tallied one block versus Delaware State, bringing his season total to 51 which ranks No. 5 in Seattle U's single-season record book.
• Seattle U went 11-9 in the WAC regular season. The win mark continues Seattle U's double-digit conference wins streak for a third consecutive season, and the only three seasons they have hit the marker since joining the conference in 2012-13.
• On the season, the Redhawks are 5-10 in games decided by five points or less. Twelve of 14 total losses have been by seven points or less.
• While a portion of his points came at other institutions (Idaho and Houston), Cameron Tyson has become just the second player ever to don a Seattle University jersey and have over 2,000 career points. Seattle U's all-time leading scorer is Johnny O'Brien (1950-53) with 2,733 career points. Tyson sits at 2,110 and counting.
• On the offensive end, Seattle U is shooting 44.5% from the field on the season, their highest season total since the first year of the program's modern DI history in 2008-09 when they finished the season having shot at a 45.2% clip.
• The Redhawks lead the WAC and are among the top teams in the nation in three-point percentage defense, holding teams to 29.6% from beyond the arc.
• Kobe Williamson has scored a pair of game-winning baskets on the season, including a putback, and-1 layup and free throw at California Baptist on Feb. 3 and a putback dunk on Feb. 17 at Utah Tech.
• Williamson has also turned in career-best numbers all season long. The 6-8 forward is averaging 9.1 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 45% FGs, 28% 3s and 78% FTs. These are career-highs for the fourth-year junior (due to COVID) who averaged 4.2 points and 3.9 rebounds while shooting 37% FGs last season.
• Alex Schumacher scored his 1,500th career point at SFA on Jan. 18 as part of a 24-point effort. His 12th point of the night hit the milestone marker. Schumacher joins Cameron Tyson to give Seattle U a pair of players who have over 1,500 career points.
• The Redhawks are 8-0 on the season when keeping opponents under 60 points.
• The overtime finish at Grand Canyon on Feb. 1 was the Redhawks' fifth game to go extra time this season. They are 1-4 in OT games this season
