This game was all about Iona's perimeter game vs Siena's Inside game.
Iona's style of play is similar to the Stags. Perimeter game, proper spacing, 3-point shooting and faster tempo. All these characteristics could result in inconsistent play, but I would call it extreme Momentum shifts, as long as you win. However, Iona does have a lot of firepower (13 three-pointers). I don't know if the Stags have that type of Fire Power, But we certainly had it in our win over the Gaels this year.
But Siena offers a different style…. they are ultra consistent and very strong on the interior. Check out Bispring, Ogunyemi and long going for 17, 18, and 18. Plus with Wright back, he can take it to the hoop.
Iona showed us they can win with their style. We have to play like Iona.
Plus the #9 seed Holy Cross (14-19)(5-13) played none of their tournament games at home:
Patriot League Tournament Tue, Mar 01 at Loyola (MD.) - Baltimore, Md. 7:30 p.m. W, 72-67 Thu, Mar 03 at Bucknell - Lewisburg, Pa. 7:00 p.m. W, 77-72 (2OT) Sun, Mar 06 at Army, West Point - West Point, N.Y. 12:00 p.m. W, 60-38 Wed, Mar 09 at Lehigh - Bethlehem, Pa. 7:30 p.m. W, 59-56
Congrats to Holy Cross. They won 3 of the 4 games handily, but they hit a spectacular game tying basket vs Bucknell. So they were good and lucky….. that is what is needed for a 9th seed to win.
The Patriot League Tournament games are played at the higher seed's home court. What is most interesting is that there were 4,587 fans at Lehigh's 6,000 seat Stabler Arena for Holy Cross's PL Championship game on Wednesday at 7:30 pm but 3,115 fans at the TUC in Albany for Iona's win over Monmouth in the MAAC Championship game on Monday at 7:00 pm.
I actually like the neutral court tournament weekend for the MAAC. The biggest problem with it however is that it is coupled with the women which leaves odd game times for the men. Having the Stags tip off at 9PM while the women play at 2PM is not going to help draw attendance figures.
All the other major conference tournaments are men only.
Not saying the women should not be included, just that the commissioner has his priorities screwed up.
I like that the women play at the MAAC Tourney. It gives fans something to do between Fairfield Men's games. I agree that the women do take some good game-times from the Men, but that can easily be solved by starting the Women's tourney a day earlier. Nobody is interested in Women's PIG games.

I would love to meet some of the idiots that wanted Phil Martelli fired a few years ago. It is great to see St. Joseph's winning the A10 Championship. Mark Reed must be like so this is what winning is like! Hopefully he gives Fr. Von Arx a call and explains how it is done.
